As International Women’s Day approaches, we can’t wait to celebrate all of the strong, fierce, and amazing women in our lives. One of our favorite days of the year, International Women’s Day was made to encourage people to "challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements.” In honor of March 8th, we’ve highlighted three of the city’s most powerful women who inspire us and prove daily that women can do anything that men can do (but backwards and in heels).
Tory Burch
This iconic New Yorker has amassed a fashion empire of more than 150 stores worldwide and an estimated $1 billion in annual sales. The woman radiates poise, confidence, and sheer perfection, but what we love the most about her is her dedication to empowering fellow female entrepreneurs. As Burch built her empire, she learned the obstacles faced by women and created the Tory Burch Foundation to support women entrepreneurs. Providing access to capital, entrepreneurial education, and mentorship and networking opportunities, Burch’s mission isn’t a charity, but as she puts it, “It’s about helping to empower women to help themselves. By providing resources and tools, we can level the playing field for women entrepreneurs, and helping them to grow their businesses benefits their families, their communities and, in turn, all of us.”
Anna Wintour
No women’s power list would be complete without the legendary Ms. Wintour. Known around the world for her ability to make or break any designer, the fashionista has reigned at the top of Vogue the masthead for more than a quarter of a century. Though whisperings have been heard of her cool demeanor and perfectionist persona, her intellect, fearlessness, and pure ambition is nothing short of awe-inspiring.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
No matter your political party, it’s difficult to deny that Bronx-born Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez embodies pure female empowerment. The youngest female ever to be elected into the House of Representatives, Ms. Cortez’s confidence and determination has led her to be one of Washington D.C.’s most influential faces in government today. Receiving far more media coverage than higher-ranking members of the Senate, Alexandria’s call for civil rights and equality keeps us riveted and reminds us that no matter our background, gender, or age, we can accomplish absolutely anything.
