Broadway's Biggest Upcoming Shows
And All That Jazz...
Is there anything more synonymous with New York City than the bright lights of Broadway? The Great White Way has always been a major draw for music and theater fans, but now it seems that Broadway’s buzz is bigger than ever. With the revolutionary Hamilton becoming a mainstream phenomenon, the world’s eyes are watching the Theater District closer than ever. Though tickets to Lin Manuel Miranda’s masterpiece, may still be harder to get your hands on than Wonka’s Golden Ticket, Broadway has a slew of exciting new musicals slated to open in the coming months that are sure to entertain fans of every genre. Here are a few highlights opening in New York’s most famous theaters throughout the coming months.

FROZEN
At the top of everyone’s list is Disney’s Frozen - the juggernaut of a film that had the entire world belting out “Let It Go” for an entire summer. The play, which will undoubtedly be a big-budget spectacular, will open February 2018 at New York’s legendary St. James Theater and is sure to be the hottest new ticket in town.
SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS
Following an engagement in Chicago, Spongebob Squarepants will bring its zany humor to the Palace Theater, with performances beginning November 6th and an official opening night set for December 4th. Though seemingly staged for children, the songs are sure to also please adult musical palette’s with a score of original songs from classic and contemporary artists, including Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Cyndi Lauper, Sara Bareilles, Lady Antebellum, John Legend, Plain White T's, Panic! at the Disco, the late David Bowie, and more.
HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD
With a live countdown on the website to even register for ticket access, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be one of the hardest tickets to come by when it opens at the Lyric Theater Spring 2018. The critically acclaimed play, which is presented in two parts, finds the famous Hogwarts characters now as adults and follows Harry and his son, Albus in a new and exciting conflict. Already debuted in the UK, the play has won 22 major theatre awards and is the most-awarded production in the history of Britain’s prestigious Olivier Awards, winning a record-breaking nine awards including Best New Play and Best Director.
FARINELLI AND THE KING
Starring Oscar and three-time Tony winner, Mark Rylance of Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, Farinelli and The King comes to Broadway following sold-out performances at London’s iconic West End and Shakespeare’s Globe. The play is inspired by the true story of the Italian opera singer and Phillipe V, an almost-mad Spanish monarch. Audiences will find something truly unique in this production that features intimate seating, candlelight, and traditional baroque instruments. Previews begin December 5th, with the play scheduled to run for a limited sixteen-week engagement.
ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE
Touting itself as more than a musical, but as a way of life, Escape to Magaritaville will open on Broadway in Spring 2018 at the Marquis Theater. Fans of Jimmy Buffet will get to escape to the sounds of his greatest classics while learning about “the choices we make – and the people we become – once we’ve had a change in latitude.” The musical comedy has Tony Award nominees and winners at its helm and tells the story of “a tropical island resort and its part-time bartender, part-time singer and full time charmer who thinks he’s got life all figured out. Until a beautiful career-minded tourist steals his heart and makes him question everything.”
MY FAIR LADY
The beloved musical by Lerner and Loewe will return to Broadway after a 25-year absence in a venue befitting of its legacy – the Vivian Beaumont Theater at the iconic Lincoln Center. The 1956 classic, which still evokes memories of a young Audrey Hepburn and dashing Rex Harrison singing and dancing across the silver screen, will come to life under Bartlett Sher. Sher is a Tony-winning director who recently, and successfully, brought revivals of South Pacific and the King and I back to the stage. We still have yet to learn who will play the legendary roles, but we are certain that whoever is cast will be absolutely ‘loverly.’ Performances are scheduled to begin March 22, 2018, with an official opening date of April 19th.
