Our Favorite Picks To Cure Your Late Night Cravings
We’ve waxed eloquent about the nightlife scene in New York. With the city housing the world’s most exclusive clubs, quaint bars, and celebrity haunts, the ‘City that Never Sleeps’ truly doesn’t for those who want to indulge their nocturnal side. And for those leaving the nightclubs and bars after 3am, or even for those who just have an incurable late night craving, New York offers late night eats of every genre, in every neighborhood, to satisfy every taste. We’ve compiled our list of some of our favorite spots where the kitchen stays open until the wee hours of the morning:
American Comfort Food:
Cafeteria
Don’t be fooled by its name. This Chelsea staple isn’t anything reminiscent of our childhood cafeterias that included trays, lunch ladies, and mystery meat. Instead, Cafeteria is a late night haunt that includes an outside doorman, chic modern interiors, the city’s prettiest crowds, and an elevated and eclectic comfort food menu. It may not be the newest venue on the list, but it’s been around for years, and with very good reason. Though it’s a bit of a scene, the kitchen is open 24 hours daily and serves consistently delicious and comforting dishes alongside seasonal cocktails. We recommend their famous signature dishes and drinks like the fried chicken and waffles, world-renowned mac and cheese, or Cactus Pear Champagne Mojitos.

Crif Dogs
In the heart of the East Village, you will find an unassuming hot dog joint that has become renowned for its deep-fried hot dogs. We promise, they are worth every single calorie. The menu and the venue are simple, unpretentious, and are open until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays and until 2am Monday-Thursday and Sunday nights. If all you want for the night is a really good hot dog, we suggest their Chihuahua, perfect for a cheat day, with bacon, avocados, and sour cream. If you are looking for something a little more refined, we suggest entering the vintage phone booth tucked inside the restaurant. Here is the entry point for one of the city’s best speakeasies, PDT (short for Please Don’t Tell). Hidden in a back room is a sleek and classic cocktail bar, where high-end classic cocktails pair surprisingly well with the simple comfort food served from Crif Dogs.

Classic French Fare:
L’Express
Open 24-hours a day, seven days a week, L’Express is a classic French café in Gramercy that serves classic French fare such as short ribs bourguignon, steak au poivre, and Moules Mariniéres Frites to one of the city’s most eclectic crowds. Situated on Park Avenue South, the bistro is a watering hole for business types, modelistas, locals, partygoers, and tourists alike.
New York Magazine raves about the restaurant, stating “Cocktails are strong and classic; beers include several lush, complex French and Belgian brews; and the atmosphere plumbs our collective memory of brasseries past without descending (too deeply) into stereotype. Above all, the menu is uncompromising… “

Ukrainian Delights:
Veselka
This East Village eatery is a New York institution, serving the East Village’s best traditional Ukrainian food since 1954. For over sixty-one years, the unpretentious coffee shop has provided a cozy atmosphere 24-hours a day for New York patrons and visitors. The restaurant prides itself on its homemade goods and locally sourced purveyors and offers borscht, goulash, and pierogis. According to their website, they make 3,000 pierogis daily, 5,000 gallons of borscht yearly, and 2,500 potato pancakes each week. While we recommend this as a stop year-round, the comforting food is especially perfect to warm up in the chilling winter weather.

Latin Eats
Coppelia
Located a stone’s throw away from the Meat Packing District and some of the city’s most famous nightlife is Coppelia, a 24-hour Cuban restaurant and diner that serves a full menu and extensive bar, specializing in fresh flavors and traditional Latin spirits like mezcal, tequila, pisco, and cachaca. Like so many others on our list, this quaint diner with friendly, warm service also offers a parade of the city’s most interesting people.
